Content Type: A book talk about The New Heretics
Description: As a cultural anthropologist, Rebekka King’s research explores the experiences of some progressive Christians who, through an engagement with modern science, historical criticism, and liberal humanism, come to reject what are often considered central tenets of Christian belief and practice. In this book talk about her 2023 book, The New Heretics: Skepticism, Secularism, and Progressive Christianity, King will explore the experiences of deconversion/deconstruction among those progressive Christians who retain a Christian identity, albeit as atheists or nonbelievers. Through examples drawn from her ethnographic fieldwork, King will unpack the religious and moral dimensions of doubt and disbelief to show how the act of questioning and rejecting God—alongside other theological tenets—is framed as a moral activity.
