Description: People all around the U.S. are struggling with debt. Debt weighs on our minds, forces us to take side hustles, makes us move from place to place to find better jobs to pay it off. Debt is something almost everyone is dealing with, and our national economy can't function without it, but when American Christians talk about debt, it's usually in the mode of Dave Ramsey's shame-inflected individualism.
But there are other ways the Scriptures offer us to think about debt, most notably in the idea of the year of Jubilee, when God mandates debt forgiveness. At Jubilee Baptist Church, we've experimented in different forms of debt forgiveness, and this talk by Kevin Georgas, Jubilee's Co-pastor of Worship and Teaching, will tell a little bit of that story while also giving people some concrete ideas for how their communities can practice debt liberation, too.
