On Purity Culture: Moving from Rage-Journaling to Public Scholarship

You are viewing a previous festival year: 2024
Description: Those who grew up in evangelical purity culture know that we could each write thousands of pages about the awkward, painful, unjust, or terrifying lessons we learned about our bodies, sexualities, and genders from youth leaders. And many of us have. What I have learned as a theology professor and purity culture scholar is that it is sometimes difficult to tease out how to bring our unique perspective to a topic that is (paradoxically) both trendy and so emotionally difficult to engage. It either feels too close to home to write or talk about, or it only comes out in screams. In this workshop, we will discuss, discover, and co-create ways to move from private “rage-journaling” to crafting article, poem, or creative non-fiction essays for a public.
