How to be published: tips for new and aspiring writers
Time: Fri 11:00AM
Venue: Portal
Style: Workshop
Description: Do you have stories and ideas you’d love to share with the world? Are you passionate about writing but don’t have a platform to broadcast your work? It can be confusing to know how to pursue publication, not to mention that once you do figure out how, it can be terrifying to hit “Send” to submit a pitch, proposal, or essay.
This workshop is meant to clarify submission processes, humanize the publishing journey, and discuss various strategies and best practices for sharing your writing. With a special emphasis on freelance magazine writing, the presentation and Q&A will also consider book deals, online writing, writing for different audiences (e.g. academic or popular) and the craft of writing itself. The workshop will be led by Jessica Mesman, associate editor for the Christian Century, who has also written several books and a popular blog. She will be joined by Cassidy Hall, podcaster and author of Queering Contemplation, and Jon Mathieu, community engagement editor for the Christian Century and writer of its Editors’ Picks newsletter.
