Followup Conversation: AI, Quantum Computers, and Mind Uploading: Connecting the Emerging Church with Science and Technology

You are viewing a previous festival year: 2024
Description: This is a followup conversation to Calvin's presentation in Terra earlier on Saturday. Many concerns, such as global climate change, would not be existential threats if they had been addressed decades earlier, before crisis mode. Now is the time for the church to understand and speak up about breakthrough, breathtaking technological developments that go beyond individual impacts to permanently altering the species or even ending the human race. For example, artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computing have received much deserved press in the last year and is gaining increasing attention from business, government, and the general public. Whole brain emulation, commonly termed mind-uploading, is being discussed by theologians and ethicists, and at least one company is actively pursuing the idea. Such technologies and programs will exponentially impact our lives and world, impacts bringing attendant ethical, privacy, economic, and security concerns. The church can play a major role in thoughtfully addressing the moral imperative that comes with ever more potent technologies. Equitable access and productive, rather than destructive, outcomes are at stake. Mind-uploading, in addition to the above concerns, will be used to illustrate the above potent technologies and their profound theological and spiritual formation implications.
