Content Type: Ideas to support foster families
Description: There are nearly 400,000 children & teens in the US foster care system, and only about half as many licensed foster homes. For kids who age out without finding a permanent connection, the stats are grim: 20% will become instantly homeless, 7 out of 10 young women will become pregnant before age 21, and fewer than 3% will ever graduate with a college degree. This is especially problematic because foster care disproportionately impacts children of color.
While a number of well-intentioned, loving families go through the licensing process to welcome these children, about half will close their homes to foster care within the first year. Why? How can our congregations help buck the trend? Join an experienced foster mom for an honest conversation about what we need, what we don’t, and what the church can do to better include, support, and sustain foster families.
