Description: Contra Dancing—an experience of community. Last year at the WGF, we held a dance on Saturday afternoon. Everyone had a good time. We want to give people an experience of Contra dance community, so that that they may try out a contra dance in their local area. Contra dance comes from English Country Dancing in New England and Square Dancing in the SE United States. Contra dance is done in 2 lines with sets of 4 people. The dancers progress down the line so that everyone gets to dance with everyone in the line. These forms of social dancing are a deep expression of inclusive community.
We will have a dance caller who will teach participants the pattern of the dance and a 4-person live band, called “Wild Geese.” The caller will teach the dance to the participants and walk them through the dance and then call the dance as people engage with music movement and community. The dance can take place outside under a tent in the late afternoon or evening. People who get a taste of social dancing at Wild Goose can connect with a Contra/square dance group in the place where they live.
