The Fractured Whole: A Queer Minister's Guide To Reconstructing Faith for LGBTQ+ & Allies
Time: Fri 11:30AM
Venue: Relating Arts
Style: Workshop
Content Type: LGBTQ+ Guide To Reconstucting Faith
Description: James Baldwin reminds us, “The betrayal of belief is not the same as ceasing to believe”. Deconstruction has been a collective experience in the queer community and with allies, yet a surprising number of folx struggle to reconstruct their faith. After considerable doubt, how do we integrate what we’ve decided to keep? What new images might be born from our old theology?
Using a framework of faith formation, storytelling, and the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi –embracing the beauty of imperfection in restored pottery - we will consider where we see ourselves in this process of transformation. During this experience, participants will be invited to begin with a check-in meditation followed by a brief overview of the faith formation process. We will then engage with storytelling prompts to contemplate core beliefs about ourselves and the Divine that leads to a collaborative art piece. Each participant is encouraged through words or images to create a prayer flag fabric piece that captures an integrated belief. These flags will be strung together to visually display a more whole and connected story of our faith. We will conclude this experience with a blessing that honors our belovedness wherever we are on this brave journey!
