Practicing Lament: Spiritual Practices for Tending Grief

You are viewing a previous festival year: 2024
Style: Workshop
Description: We are facing too many complex losses to count. And many of us have felt ill equipped to process our own particular griefs on top of the weight of the pandemic, on going wars, political strife and the constant awareness of the suffering unfolding because of racism, misogyny, and all kinds of hate. Many of us have been told that it’s weak or bad to grieve but it’s not true. Lament is about telling the truth about loss and love. It’s about letting grief move through us, to be metabolized instead of staying stuck. We need lament just as much as we need hope and trust and love. In this experience, I’ll talk about how I learned to lament the hard way, about why it matters and why it can be strangely hopeful. I’ll describe some historical ways to engage it and then provide some possibilities for participants to engage lament for themselves.
